‘Shail’ means Mountain & ‘Putri’ means Daughter. Hence she is called as Shailputri. It is believed that this Goddess is the rebirth of Sati, the daughter of Lord Himalayan and wife of Lord Shiva. Maa Shailputri is worshipped on first day of Navratri.
Devotees perform different rituals, puja and fasting. Varanasi is the only place in India where all the 9 temples of 9 forms of Goddess Durga are located.
